Continuing the next tale of newly appointed US Marshal Will Fane’s adventures on the wild West Texas Frontier of the post-Civil War era, I found that my initial delight was strengthened in book 2.

This is the second in a series and, while it starts fresh with a new series of events and conflicts so might be listened to standalone in a pinch, there is an understanding that the listener is already familiar with the characters, situation, and setting that carry over from the first book.

Will is out exploring parts of his new ranch land to get to know it and to see what resources are available as he considers how to best use the land. That’s when he comes across a rocky outcrop with indian petroglyphs which he finds fascinating and then he is startled by a 17th century date and Spanish words scratched into the rock. This leads him to discover the cave, the Spanish artifacts, and… you guessed it, treasure.

The story continues on with Will spending time with his lovely wife and children, his ranch people, and then of course, he gets the inevitable telegraphs needing him in his Federal Marshal capacity. But, these latest are for some hard, toughened men that one man alone can’t tackle. For the first time, former Buffalo Soldier, Isum Wood, his new Deputy Marshal partners him.

Between western town showdowns, stagecoach hold up, rustlers, cheating gamblers, army deserters, and more, Will uses his wits and his skills to bring law and order to the territory. Beside him is his strong, lovely pioneer woman wife and his loyal hands and they are needed.

As I indicated, this is a series of adventures for Will, his family, and his people with lots of action, but some twists, and not just a few tender moments with family life and his wife. There are interesting authentic details brought out, expansive descriptions, but also a whole lot of just daily life between the action moments.

All in all, I was left needing to continue on with the series especially with that dangling thread about the threat from a feuding family after him for arresting their kin. Want a good western that brings in home life, family, and romance with the action? Look no further.

A.T. Chandler continued in the role of narrator for which I was deeply glad. I’m pretty sure he will forever be the voice of this series of characters in my mind and I love the way he tells a western and specifically Will’s story. He does great with women, children, older folk, and even people with slightly different drawls and twangs and foreign accents. He makes a scene whatever tone it needs to be and never overacts the highly intense parts.
